I recently posted a breakdown of all 42 books that I read in 2014 by rating. Overall, it was a darn good year in reading. Everything I read was rated 3 stars or higher.
Probably my most notable accomplishment was completing the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny. I read books 4 through 10 and, although the series overall was highly imaginative and entertaining, the last couple of books were not that great. The story really tailed off and went out with more of a fizzle than a bang.
In 2013, I also took the opportunity to read more from Brandon Sanderson’s catalog. I’ve said many times now that I think Sanderson writes the best magic systems in fantasy today. Reading more of his works only affirmed that belief. If I had to pick, I would probably choose The Rithmatist as my favorite, but I also found The Alloy of Law to be unexpectedly good as well.
The series that I had the hardest time putting down had to be Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles. I read the first of the series in 2012, but followed up by reading the next four in 2013. The latest book in the series is currently sitting on my bookshelf and I can’t wait to dig in. Hearne’s series is fast-paced and fun. I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I also like that the novels aren’t ridiculously long like many fantasy stories.
With all that said, here are some interesting stats about those novels:
As usual, I listened to a lot of audio books in 2013. I listen while I commute to and from work, exercise, and do chores around the house. It’s a great way to get more reading in and definitely makes repetitive tasks a lot more enjoyable.
- Audio books: 18
- Ebooks: 5
- Printed novels: 16
- Graphic novels: 3
As usual, all of the books that I read fell into the “speculative fiction” genre. About 3/4 of them were fantasy, while the other quarter was science fiction. That’s pretty typical for me since I tend to prefer fantasy a bit more.
- Science fiction: 11
- Fantasy: 31
As you can see below, I was lucky enough to read a lot of great novels this year. Almost all of them were 4 or 5 stars and all were at least 3 stars.
- 5 stars: 13
- 4 stars: 22
- 3 stars: 7
